Moutin Reunion Quartet in concert

Veteran jazz musicians and identical twin brothers François and Louis Moutin are two of the most highly regarded rhythm section players in Europe, both together and individually. All the way from Paris, France they arrive at the Erie Art Museum Annex to perform their engaging jazz melodies.

After many stints and recordings with other great artists such as Johnny Griffin, John Abercrombie, Martial Solal, James Moody and Toots Thielemans, in 1998 Louis and François Moutin created the reunion quartet to play their own compositions. With Louis on drums and François on bass along with saxophonist Sylvain Beuf and pianist Baptiste Trotignon, their music resonates with lively energy that is full of emotion and spontaneity. Their debut album, Power Tree, gained immediate critical acclaim in their home country, leaving the band in high demand at many of the top festivals and venues throughout Europe. While heavyweights in France, their success has recently poured into the U.S., and they’ve transported their distinctive sound in Northeastern U.S. with select concerts.

Their live performances are impressing American jazz audiences. The Boston Herald notes “It feels a little shameful to be distracted by their good looks and blushing Gallic charm, especially as it becomes apparent that the music is stunning. It gives modern jazz a good name, even if you think it needs one; their spontaneous integrations are breathtaking at points” while The Washington Post simply states, “the level of musicianship and invention is consistently impressive.”

Driven by a common desire to make great music, they offer a fresh, dynamic, and funky approach to modern jazz. [ticket information].
